  • Description

The authorities in Monrovia are today (Thursday) declaring the result of Tuesday's Liberian election, in which President William Tubman and his National True Whig Party - which has ruled the country since 1878 - sought continuing public support. President Tubman was standing for his sixth term in office - some 24 years - and Vice President William Tolbert for his fifth term.

President Tubman was the sole Presidential candidate, and all the candidates seeking election to the two-house Legislature belong to the True Whig Party. He campaigned on a platform of development at home, and peace and non-interference in other countries. The election was seen as a test of public confidence of the 71-year-old President.

In addition to President Tubman and Vice President Tolbert - who is also President of the Baptist World Alliance - some 61 of the 70-member Legislature were seeking re-election. There are about 700,000 voters in Liberia, and early reports described them as turning out in large numbers.
