SYNOPSIS: The Italian Government's drive against the Mafia has resulted in 43 suspected bosses being exiled to small mediterranean islands and another 56 arrested on charges of association to commit crime. A number of the suspects have been rounded up in Sicily and brought by train to Palermo. It was the slaying of that city's Chief Public Prosecutor which sparked of the Italian wide campaign to stamp out the Mafia.

Victims of the Mafia dragnet so far include former alleged American gangland figures such as Joe Adonis--sent to four years' confinement in a tiny village--and Frank Coppola, exiled with 14 others to the island of Asinara.

For the first time in the Mafia's centuries' old history, two women have been detained. One is a Sicilian for whom police demand a long term confinement because they say she is a confidante of a Mafia boss. The other is the owner of a Rome beauty pearlier who police allege is linked with international drug trading. Throughout the Government campaign "biographies" of those arrested are being published. They list the suspect's criminal activities. Some members of Parliament have called for Government anti-Mafia treaties with the United States and European countries.
