  • Description

In London the annual Chelsea Flower Show, which the Royal Horticultural Society claims as the most famous of its kind in the world, opened to the public on Tuesday (17 May).

SYNOPSIS: The theme of this years's show is Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee and it is being held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. All manner of garden products -- from flowers to vegetables -- are on show, together with the materials and tools needed to cultivate them.

Covering 27 acres (about 11 hectares), the show also includes overseas exhibits, mainly from Belgium, Holland, Colombia, New Zealand and South Africa. Many of the flowers have been artificially controlled to bring them into bloom for the show, with growers having to contend with unseasonal weather conditions.

Designs in flowers and vegetables are part of the show but the speciality is new plants, or varieties of familiar ones. Two roses have been named in honour of Jubilee Year. They are Royal Salute, a cherry pink drawf, and Silver Jubilee itself, a pinkish hybrid tea-rose which is a descendant of the famous "Peace" strain. A Japanese garden complete with lady attendant is another star attraction.
