  • Description

BRITAIN'S ANTI-APARTHEID MOVEMENT AND THE 'UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION' HELD A MASS RALLY IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LONDON, TODAY (SUNDAY) CALLING FOR THE OVERTHROW OF THE ILLEGAL REGIME IN RHODESIA. SOME 5,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE RALLY, AMONG THEM TWENTY TWO BRITISH MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT, SEVERAL PERSONALITIES FROM THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD, AND SOME LEADING CHURCHMEN. SPEAKERS INCLUDED MR. F.ZIYAMBE, THE EUROPEAN REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ZIMBABWE AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION, AND MISS JUDY TODD, 21 YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER OF THE FORMER RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, GARFIELD TODD, WHO IS NOW RESTRICTED TO HIS FARM.

MR. ZIMYABE SAID THE SITUATION IN RHODESIA REQUIRED ACTION NOT WORDS. "WHAT WE WANT IN ZIMBABWE," HE SAID, "IS THAT SMITH MUST BE REMOVED. ONCE SMITH IS OUT, THEN THE ONLY REASONABLE THING TO DO IS TO CONVENE A CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE".

MISS TODD DREW WARM APPLAUSE FROM THE RALLY SUPPORTERS AND REMINDED THE RALLY THAT ONLY FIVE PER CENT OF THE RHODESIAN COMMUNITY WAS REPRESENTED BY MR. SMITH'S ILLEGAL GOVERNMENT.

SHE SAID THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT SHOULD LAY DOWN FOUR POINTS REGARDING RHODESIA.....

THERE WERE A FEW DISSIDENTS IN THE CROWD. ONE YOUNG RHODESIAN STUDENT REPEATEDLY HECKLED THE SPEAKERS UNTIL HE WAS MOVED BY POLICE. A LONE EMPIRE LOYALIST STOOD WITH A BANNER READING: "STAND BY SMITH".
