  • Description

The United states Government avoided a clash with 1,000 ex-servicemen in Washington on Friday (23 April) by abandoning efforts to clear them from sleeping on lawns near the Houses of Congress. The Vietnam veterans were camping out for a second successive night in defiance of a Supreme Court order, when word came that they could stay.

Many veterans threw their war decorations on the Capitol steps, saying that they were worthless. The ex-soldiers are a part of an anti-war demonstration, expected to be swelled to a total of 300,000 people as the mass marches began today (Saturday, 24 April).
