  • Description

Sri Lanka's famed zoological gardens -- one of the island's biggest tourist attractions.

Earlier this week, a small ceremony marked the handing over of two white-lipped deer to the gardens -- a gift from the People's Republic of China to the country formerly known as Ceylon.

The Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Ma Tzu Ching, arrived to make the official speech. It was noted during the ceremony that Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Mrs. Bandarakanike had presented a baby elephant to the Peking Zoo during her official visit to China recently.

The two deer presented to Sri Lanka this week belong to a rare species found only in South West China. It was the first time China had presented them to a foreign country.
