Background: The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kurt Waldheim arrived in Dar Es Salaam on Wednesday (23 May) for a brief talk with President Julius Nyerere.

Mr. Waldheim arrived at Dar Es Salaam airport after a 48-hour visit to lusaka. He said that Zambia's decision to close the border with Rhodesia was in line with the United Nations position on sanctions. He said he'd been assured by President Nyerere that Tanzania would do everything it could to help both Zambia and the United Nations.

While he was in Zambia, the United Nations leader discussed details of international aid needed to help landlocked Zambia re-route its trade.

SYNOPSIS: A large party of officials was at Dar Es Salaam airport on Wednesday for the arrival of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kurt Waldheim. The welcoming party was headed by Tanzania's Prime Minister, Mr. Kawawa. Mr. Waldheim had just spent two days in Lusaka, where he discussed with Zambian officials the details of international aid needed to help landlocked Zambia re-route its trade. Mr. Waldheim's visit to Dar Es Salaam was only for 24 hours.

When the jet landed, Prime Minister Kawawa was the first to greet Mr. Waldheim. He told the United Nations leader that his visit to Dar Es Salaam -- brief though it was -- was extremely welcome. later, Mr. Waldheim spent ninety minutes in conference with Tanzania's president, Julius Nyarere. The talks were, he said very useful. He said they discussed the many problems with which southern Africa was confronted.

During his brief stay in Lusaka, Mr. Waldheim analyzed Zambia's decision to close the border with Rhodesia. He said that the decision was in line with the United Nations position on sanctions. He said he's been assured by President Nyerere that Tanzania would do everything it could to help both Zambia and the United Nations. He said that he hoped United Nations member states would fully implement sanctions against Rhodesia.
