Background: Top tennis players Ilie Nastase of Rumania and Jimmy Connors of the United States displayed their characteristic brilliance as they won their first round matches in Britain's Dewar Cup Indoor Tennis tournament on Monday (10 November). The games were played in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, but the 45,000 pound sterling (about 90,000 US dollar) tournament moves to London's Albert Hall on Wednesday (12 November) after the first three days.
Nastase, who arrived in Edinburgh 24 hours late after losing his passport in Stockholm, put up with no such delays on the court where he played some superb tennis to beat US Davis Cup player Erik Van Dillen in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Van Dillen was a stronger player than Nastase might have expected to be drawn against in the first round but he was never allowed to make a game of it.
American Jimmy Connors, who suffered a reversal in Britain when he lost his Wimbledon crown to fellow countryman Arthur Ashe in a match with a good deal of feeling in it, was drawn against Poland's Wojciech Fibak. Connors took the first set 6-2 but in the second set Fibak showed himself able to meet Connors' high pace game. At one stage Fibak was serving with a 5-4 lead but Connors recovered and eventually won the tie break game for a 6-2, 7-6 victory.
Wimbledon champion Ashe who is also in the competition beat fellow American Mike Estep 6-4, 6-2 in his second round match.
Both Connors and Nastase had an easier time in the second round the following day (11 November). Connors beat Sherwood Stewart of the United States 6-1, 6-1 and Nastase beat Britain's Martin Robins on 6-1, 6-2.
