Thousands of Parisians marched through the streets yesterday (Monday) to stage an 11th hour protest against the imminent demolition of Les Halles -- the city's traditional food market. The market, itself, has already been moved to the outskirts of the French capital. Now the nineteenth century market buildings -- 10 iron and glass pavilions -- are to be swept away to provide the site for a new underground station and building complex.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of Parisians spent Monday mounting a massive last-ditch protest against the imminent demolition of Les Halles -- traditional site of the city's food market. The market itself, has already been moved to the outskirts of the French capital. Now the ten nineteenth-century pavilions are due for early demolition to make way for a new Metro station and building complex. Fifty years of debate about the future of the site culminated last month when the city council voted anew to demolish the buildings.

This is one of the cult restaurants that owed its attraction to the mystique surrounding Les Halles. The odd fruit stall can still be found keeping alive the traditions of the area. Les Halles, with its narrow streets and paralysing traffic congestion, has long been a nightmare for the planners. But many Parisians prefer to keep the chaos, and the character, of the city's market site for the last eight-hundred years.
