Background: The Soviet Union today (Wednesday) launched a three-man space craft. Soyuz-5 commanded by Colonel Boris Volynov. The other two crew members are flight engineer Alexei Yeliseyev and research engineer Lieutenant-Colonel Yevgeny Khrunov. Soon after the spacecraft went into orbit it sent back television pictures from the interior of the capsule, showing the ??? of the cosmonauts.
Moscow Television showed film of the launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Central Asia about an hour after the launching at 7,15 GMT today.
The Soyuz 5 established radio and visual contact with the one man Soyuz 4 which was launched yesterday, within minutes of going into "a calculated orbit round the earth" ans ships immediately started joint experiments. Their joint manouevres may include a docking operation.
The initial orbit of Soyuz 5 will take the craft round the earth once every 88.7 minutes. Its maximum distance from the Earth is 230 kms (143 miles) ans at its lowest point it is 200 kms (125 miles) above the planet.
Colonel Volynov, 34, who is married with two children, began his training as a cosmonaut eight years ago. and 35 year old Lieutenant Colonel Yevgeny Khrunov began his training at the same time. 34 year old Alexei Yeliseyev is the third civilian to fly in the Soviet space programme.
