  • Description

There are flying Bats, Flying Squirrels, Flying Lizards, Pterodactyls (extinct), Flying Snakes, Flying Fish and of course birds. But to Mr. Mike Walton of Taunton, Somerset, U.k., that formidable list of serial performers is a challenge - a challenge which he answered in two weeks. For that was the time he took to build his flying machine of wood and tissue paper and strap it to his body and arms.

Assisted, hoped, by the impetus of running down a steep hill, he would become airborne, flap his "wings" and stay up. Mrs. Walton stood by in a field near their home to tape on her husband's spectacles just in case his air speed got too high. Interested spectators, and a possible take-off hazard, was herd of cows.

Down the hill Mr. Walton went but despite all his flapping he never left the ground. There were two more attempts then he fell, damaging part of his machine. Now he says he is going to build a new one.
