Exercise Jungle Drum III is a combined Thai - U.S. Amphibius Assault Exercise being conducted?

  • Description

Exercise Jungle Drum III is a combined Thai - U.S. Amphibius Assault Exercise being conducted from March 10-26, 1965, in Thailand.

From this significant military exercise, it is expected to gain valuable experience in planning and conducting combined amphibious operations while developing close working relationships and understanding between Thai and United States participation.

The exercise is also expected to improve amphibious counterinsurgency tactics, technique and doctrines, as well as, test and demonstrate the ability of the U. S. and Thailand to respond quickly and powerfully to aggression.

The exercise envisions a situation where an insurgent force supported by a hypothetical aggressor nation is operating in Thailand. The Royal Thai Armed Forces have managed to neutralize the insurgents except in Southern (Peninsula) Thailand where an organized aggressor force is engaged. Aggressor sea and air forces are also in position to engage U.S. and Thai forces at sea. To dislodge and destroy the aggressor force in the peninsula as quickly as possible, Thailand asks for United States cooperation.

In response, the United States orders Commander, Seventh Fleet to execute the Jungle Drum operation in support of its ally, combined with forces made available by the Thai government.
