Background: Motor cycle racing...and the Belgian grand Prix was dominated by European riders at Francorchamps in Sunday 92 July). The day's major event - the 500 cc race - was won by will Hartog of Holland, while Italian paolo Pileri emerged victor in the 250 cc class.

SYNOPSIS: The races were run in dangerous conditions. Rods soaked by several hours of rain had begun to dry out, but still had unpredictable patches.

The start of the 250 cc race saw an early battle for the lead between France Uncini, of Italy, riding his Yamaha bike number 56, and his compatriots - Mario Lega on Mordbidelli, number 21, and Paolo Pileri, also riding a Morbidelli, number 31.

But Pileri, riding with great style, soon left them all behind.

Uncini made a determined effort to catch him, but Pileri went on to win the race in 40 minutes 35 seconds at am average speed of 187.875 kilometres per hour.

This is the start of the 500 cc race in which riders roached speeds of up to 285 kilometres per hour despite the conditions. Barry Barry Sheene, of Britain, number 7, on Suzuki, began with promise, taking an early lead. However, at the end of the first lap, his team-mate, Hartog, number 15, was in front. Sheene, Venezuelan Cecotto, number 4, and American Kenny Roberts were close behind.

The track continued to dry and, ?? the fourth lap, Cecotto rode past Roberts and began to attack Sheene and Hartog. He passed them both on the sixth and was beginning to build a lead when his engine seized.

Hartog regained the advantage, and never looked back. Roberts came second. Hartog won in 39 minutes 50.4 seconds, averaging a speed of 212.650 kilometres per hour.
