  • Description

IN SOUTH VIETNAM, ABOUT 150,000 BUDDHISTS TOOK PART IN A FUNERAL PROCESSION THROUGH THE STREETS OF SAIGON ON SUNDAY (SEPTEMBER 6TH) FOR TWO YOUTHS KILLED IN THE RECENT CLASH BETWEEN BUDDHIST AND ROMAN CATHOLIC YOUTHS.

THE PROCESSION, WHICH TOOK FOUR HOURS TO COVER THE TWO MILE ROUTE TO THE CEMETERY, WAS LED BY HUNDREDS OF MONKS IN THEIR SAFFRON ROBES, AND 113 PEDICABS FULL OF WREATHS. REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ROMAN CATHOLICS AND OTHER FAITHS, AS WELL AS THE GOVERNMENT, ALSO TOOK PART.

THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS DURING THE PROCESSION, BUT HEAVY SECURITY PRECAUTIONS HAD BEEN TAKEN TO PREVENT THIS. INFANTRY AND ARMOURED VEHICLES ASSISTED CIVILIAN AND MILITARY POLICE.

THE RED LACQUERED COFFINS WERE CARRIED TO THE CEMETERY ON GAUDY RED AND GOLD HEARSES WITH GILDED DRAGONS CARVED ON THE SIDES. WEEPING FAMILIES RODE ON THE HEARSES OR CROWDED ALONGSIDE.

ONLY A FEW HUNDRED MOURNERS WERE ALLOWED INTO THE CEMETERY AS THE COFFINS WERE LOWERED INTO THE CRYPTS, WHERE FOOD WAS PLACED AS AN OFFERING TO THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD.

THE RIOTS IN WHICH THE TWO YOUTHS DIED LED TO THE RESIGNATION OF PRESIDENT KHANH, WHO WAS LATER RESTORED AS TEMPORARY PRIME MINISTER.
