    PRESIDENT JOHNSON YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) FLEW TO NEW ORLEANS TO INSPECT DAMAGE CAUSED IN THE CITY BY HURRICANE 'BETSY' AS IT RIPPED THROUGH LOUISIANA STATE.SO FAR 26 PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE DIED IN THE HURRICANE -- MOST WERE DROWNED WHEN WATER CUT A LEVEE BANK.

    THE PRESIDENT'S VISIT CAME ONLY 15 HOURS AFTER THE FULL FORCE OF THE HURRICANE WAS FELT IN NEW ORLEANS.HE HAS DECLARED THE ENTIRE STATE OF LOUISIANA A DISASTER AREA.

    FORTY-FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN LEFT EITHER PERMANENTLY OR TEMPORARILY HOMELESS BY FLOOD WATERS, AND A SERIOUS SHORTAGE OF WATER IS REPORTED TO BE DEVELOPING IN SOME AREAS OF LOUISIANA.THEY ARE BEING HOUSED IN SHELTERS SET UP BY THE RED CROSS.

    HELICOPTERS HAVE BEEN USED TO PICK UP THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE CUT OFF BY SWIRLING FLOOD WATERS IN MANY AREAS OF THE STATE.

    FOLLOWING THE PRESIDENT'S VISIT, ARMY UNITS ARE NOW BEING SENT TO NEW ORLEANS TO PROVIDE FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND EMERGENCY SERVICES.

    AS NEW ORLEANS BEGINS TO CLEAN UP THE DEBRIS A FIRM ESTIMATE HAS NOT BEEN MADE OF THE DAMAGE.BUT IT IS BELIEVED TO BE MORE THAN 50-MILLION DOLLARS.IN ADDITION THE DAMAGE TO THE COTTON, RICE AND SUGAR CROPS IN THE STATE IS EXPECTED TO AMOUNT TO ABOUT 40-MILLION DOLLARS.

    IT MAY TAKE MONTHS TO CLEAR THE DAMAGE AND REBUILD.
