  • Description

The Ambassadors of the "Big Four" powers--the United States, the Soviet Union, France and Britain-mst in West Berlin today (Thursday) to continue discussing the problem of the divided city.

After a four-and-a-half hour session of "businesslike" discussion, the talks were adjourned until January II-though political experts from all four sides will continue consultations in the meantime.

On the eve of today's round of talks--the twelfth since "Big Four" discussions began--the East German leader Walter Ulbricht held out some hopes for an eventual settlement of the Berlin problem.

Speaking on Wednesday evening, Herr Ulbricht repeated the declaration by the seven Warsaw Pact member status last week expressing hope for a mutually acceptable agreement on West Berlin.

But he added that the main problem--the question of access to and from West Berlin--would require direct negotiation between his government and the West Germans.
