  • Description

Khmer government troops yesterday (11 March) mounted an attack on a rebel-held pagoda near Highway 4, 16 miles (25 kilometres) south-west of Phnom Penh the nation's capital.

It was the seventh day of a government drive to re-open the capital's life-line route to the deep-water port of Kompong Som.

The highway has been blocked for over two months and Phnom Penh has been supplied by armed convoys forcing their way up the Mekong River.

The rebels hold two sections of the highway. One is sixteen miles from the capital and the other is twenty miles further down the highway.

In between is the important market town of Kompong Spieu. It remains in government control after surviving rebel offensives in November last year, and January this year.

Yesterday's attack was mounted by a battalion of the Cambodian army's 28th Brigade, supported by a squadron of armoured personnel carriers.
