Background: Tornadoes and violent thunderstorms raked a large section of southern and central United States Monday (29 April)...leaving at least 11 dead and countless others injured.Damage to wrecked homes and businesses in a vast area from Louisiana to Illinois totalled millions of dollars.
One of the tornadoes did heavy damage in and around Auburn, Nebraska in the central part of the country.Homes were ripped apart.Communications lines were blown to the ground. The whirling winds picked up automobiles and hurled them across the land. One car caught up by the wind contained a mother and eight children. One of the children died later on a hospital operating table. She was fourteen years old.The others were hurt seriously. The occupants of the car were strewn for a quarter of a mine along the highway. The automobile virtually disintegrated in the violent wind.
Winds of hurricane force...some as high as 98 miles an hour...still slashed the midlands Tuesday (30 April). One storm struck a town in south Texas...bowling over outbuildings and knocking down power lines.
