  • Description

Violence broke out on Saturday (11 March) in West Bengal as thousands of voters went to the polls to elect a new state legislature.

Early reports said at least three people were dead and twenty injured in the polling day violence.

The campaign too has been marked by sporadic disturbances -- in a state where political violence has become a key election issue.

This is the fourth election in West Bengal in six years. In the three previous contests no clear majority was won by any party.

India's Prime minister, Mrs. Gandhi, herself toured West Bengal during the close states of the campaign and appealed to Bengal voters to support her Congress Party.

SYNOPSIS: A busy schedule for India's Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi on Thursday as she joined the closing stages of the campaign for the West Bengal State Elections. It was a campaign marred by sporadic outbreaks of violence -- violence which on election day itself was to claim more lives. At this election meeting at Barasat however -- there was no evidence of violence and the large crowd seemed in high spirits.

The symbol of Mrs. Gandhi's Congress Party. The Prime Minister urged the people to vote for the party. A vote for Congress, she said, would be a vote that would help her to bring change to West Bengal. She reminded electors that she had kept her promise about freeing Bangladesh and returning the refugees. In like manner, said Mrs. Gandhi, she would keep her promises to the people of West Bengal.

This was the fourth election campaign in West Bengal in six years. In the previous three, no party had gained a clear majority. This year, election violence was a key political issue.
