  • Description

CONTINUING HIS TOUR OF ARMY INSTALLATIONS IN THE NORTHERN RHODESIAN COPPERBELT, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. KAUNDA, VISITED THE NDOLA BARRACKS.

HE SAW AFRICANS RECRUITS BEING TRAINED IN THE ARMOURED CAR UNIT. THIS NEW FORCE IS THE SUCCESSOR TO THE ALL-EUROPEAN SALOUS SCOUTS ARMOURED CAR UNIT DISBANDED WITH THE END OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN FEDERATION. AT PRESENT THE FORCE STILL HAS EUROPEAN OFFICERS BUT ONCE THE AFRICANS TROOPS HAVE LEARNT THE TECHNIQUES OF HANDLING THE ARMOURED CARS THE FORCE WILL HAVE AFRICAN OFFICERS.

IN A BRIEF SPEECH TO THE RECRUITS, MR KAUNDA ASSURED THEM THAT HIS GOVERNMENT WERE URGENTLY CONSIDERING A MEMORANDUM FROM THE SOLDIERS STATING THEIR CASE FOR BETTER PAY AND CONDITIONS.
