  • Description

A new high altitude training camp has been opened in Kenya to help athletes with their final preparations for next month's Montreal Olympics.

SYNOPSIS: It is located in the highlands, at Kiganjo. All members of Kenya's track and field team are at present living there, and training in the high altitude conditions.

The country's Sports Minister Mr. Taaitta Toweett, officially opened the camp on Wednesday (23 June). Mr. Toweett was one of prime movers behind getting the camp built in time for pre-Olympic training. Athletes had been in training at the camp for several weeks before the official opening. The boxing team, with several gold medal prospects, is also in training at Kiganjo.

Mr. Toweett was introduced to Kip Keino, considered Kenya's greatest-ever athlete. Keino won two Olympic gold medals and is now the head coach of the Olympic athletic team.

While confident of winning medals, the Kenyan team realises that the competition this year will be stronger than ever before. According to officials, it's unlikely that they will win as many medals as they did at Mexico City in 1968 and Munich in 1972.

The big hope for a medal in the 10,000 metres is John Ngeno, who is being personally coached by Kip Keino. Keino says Ngeno has the strength and tenacity to win the gruelling race.
