  • Description

AT NOON TODAY (TUESDAY), AS QUEEN ELIZABETH STEPPED ON TO THE WET TARMAC OF COLOGNE AIRPORT, A BRITISH SOVEREIGN WAS AGAIN ON GERMAN SOIL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 52 YEARS. AT THE BANQUET GIVEN BY PRESIDENT LUBKE TONIGHT, THE QUEEN SAID THAT HAPPILY THE TRAGIC PERIOD IN THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE TWO PEOPLES WAS OVER AND IF THEY WISHED TO PRESERVE THE BEST OF THEIR COMMON HERITAGE THEY MUST MAKE COMMON CAUSE.

AS THE QUEEN, DRESSED IN GOLDEN YELLOW, CAME DOWN THE GANGWAY OF THE AIRCRAFT, A DEAFENING 21-GUN SALUTE CRASHED FORTH. SHE WAS THEN PRESENTED WITH A BOUQUET OF ROSES OF THE SAME SHADE AS HER COAT AND HAT. THERE HAD BEEN A HEAVY DOWNPOUR OF RAIN BUT THE SUN SHONE AS SHE WAS GREETED BY PRESIDENT LUBKE AND DR. ERHARD, THE WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR.

SMILING CROWDS THREW POSIES INTO HER CAR'S PATH AS QUEEN ELIZABETH DROVE 30 MILES ALONG A BEFLAGGED AUTOBAHN TO THE HOTEL PETERSBERG, HIGH IN THE HILLS OVERLOOKING THE SHRINE, WHERE SHE IS STAYING DURING HER TWO-DAY BONN VISIT.

THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH RETURNED TO BONN IN THE AFTERNOON FOR A SIXTY-MINUTE COURTESY CALL ON PRESIDENT LUBKE. THEY PRESENTED THE PRESIDENT WITH GIFTS OF AN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY SILVER COFFEE POT AND BRASS CANDLESTICKS. THE QUEEN INVESTED PRESIDENT LUBKE WITH THE GRAND CROSS OF THE ORDER OF THE BATH.

DURING THE AFTERNOON, THE QUEEN SENT A BUNCH OF RED ROSES TO DR. ADENAUER'S HOUSE WHERE THE 89-YEAR-OLD EX-CHANCELLOR AND CHAIRMAN OF THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC UNION IS CONFINED ON DOCTOR'S ORDERS. HE IS STILL UNWELL AFTER A SHOCK AND SHAKING HE RECEIVED LAST WEEK WHEN THE TRAIN IN WHICH HE WAS TRAVELLING HIT A LORRY.

THE MOST BRILLIANT EVENT OF THIS FIRST DAY WAS THE STATE BANQUET AND RECEPTION HELD THIS EVENING AT THE PALACE OF BRUHL, HALFWAY BETWEEN BONN AND COLOGNE. ENTHUSIASTIC CROWDS DELAYED QUEEN ELIZABETH FOR TWENTY MINUTES AS SHE DROVE TO THE PALACE FOR ONE OF THE MOST GLITTERING OCCASIONS IN POSTWAR GERMAN HISTORY.

PRESIDENT LUBKE, MRS. LUBKE AND MANY HIGH-RANKING WEST GERMANS GREETED THE QUEEN AS SHE MOUNTED THE MAGNIFICENT MAIN STAIRCASE OF THE CASTLE. SHE WORE A BELL-SKIRTED TURQUOISE SATIN DRESS, WHITE FUR STOLE AND TIARA. HER EMBROIDERED DRESS WAS INSPIRED BY THE DESIGNS OF THE SAME FRENCH ARTIST, ???, WHO DECORATED THE CASTLE INTERIOR.

SPEAKING AT THE STATE DINNER, QUEEN ELIZABETH TOLD GERMAN LEADERS THAT BRITAIN "WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORTS YOUR NATURAL WISH FOR PEACEFUL REUNIFICATION." BRITAIN BELIEVES, SHE SAID, THAT EUROPE SHOULD BE UNITED ON AS BROAD A BASIS AS POSSIBLE. THE QUEEN ADDED: "WE ARE ANXIOUS TO PLAY OUR FULL PARTY WITHIN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY".

IN WELCOMING QUEEN ELIZABETH, PRESIDENT LUBKE SAID: "WE REGARD YOUR VISIT AS A SIGN OF THE GROWING TRUST IN OUR PEOPLE. WE BELIEVE THAT THE GERMAN PEOPLE HAVE CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED THEIR DETERMINATION TO MAKE UP FOR THE PAST..."
HE ADDED THAT THE DIVISION OF GERMANY IS "A SITUATION BOTH HUMANLY AND POLITICALLY UNBEARABLE, WHICH WILL PREVENT PEACE IN EUROPE AS LONG AS THE GERMAN PROBLEM REMAINS UNSOLVED."
SIX THOUSAND CANDLES BROUGHT BY SCHOOL CHILDREN WERE LIT FOR THE QUEEN IN THE GARDENS OF THE PALACE AFTER THE BANQUET. AS THE QUEEN AND HER HUSBAND WATCHED FROM A TERRACE DECKED WITH GOLDEN AWNINGS, FILES OF SOLDIERS CARRYING FLAMING TORCHES APPEARED FROM UNDER THE TREES AND FORMED A HOLLOW SQUARE. IT WAS THE CLIMAX TO A SEARCHLIGHT "BEAT RETREAT" BY WEST GERMAN ARMED FORCES.
