  • Description

POPE PAUL, WEARING THE SIMPLE WHITE CLOTHES OF A PILGRIM, STOOD BEFORE A MILLION PEOPLE IN FATIMA TODAY (SATURDAY) AND APPEALED FOR PEACE AND THE BUILDING A NEW WORLD. THE MULTITUDE OF PILGRIMS, MANY OF WHOM HAD WALKED FOR THREE DAYS TO JOIN THE POPE IN HIS PRAYER FOR PEACE, THRONGED THE VAST SQUARE BEFORE HIS PURPLE-DRAPED ROSTRUM.

THE PILGRIMS HAD CAME TO COMMEMORATE WITH THE POPE THE SUNDAY MORNING 50 YEARS AGO WHEN THREE YOUNG SHEPHERD CHILDREN WERE SAID TO HAVE SEEN A VISION OF THE VIRGIN MARY ABOVE AN OAK TREE ON THIS REMOTE AND BARREN HILLSIDE.

THE CEREMONY REACHED A CLIMAX OF EMOTION WHEN THE POPE BLESSED A 60-YEAR-OLD CARMELITE NUN, SISTER LUCIA, THE SOLE SURVIVOR OF THE THREE CHILDREN WHO SAW THE VISION.

THE CROWD WAVING THOUSANDS OF WHITE HANDKERCHIEFS, ROARED "VIVA IL PAPA" (LONG LIVE THE POPE). SOME WEPT WITH EMOTION. HUNS LIFTED PEOPLE OF STRETCHERS ABOVE THE THRONG TO CATCH A GLIMPSE OF THE 69-YEAR-OLD PONTIFF.

POPE PAUL LEFT ROME THIS MORNING ON HIS PILGRIMAGE-HIS FOURTH TRIP ABROAD DURING HIS PONTIFICATE AND HIS FIRST VISIT TO A EUROPEAN COUNTRY OUTSIDE ITALY. HE WAS MET AT MONTE REAL AIRBASE BY PORTUGAL'S PRESIDENT, ADMIRAL AMERICO THOMAZ, PRIME MINISTER, FR. ANTONIO DE OLIVEIRA SALAZAR AND OTHER PORTUGUESE GOVERNMENT AND CHURCH LEADERS.

THE POPE DROVE TO FATIMA STANDING IN AN OPEN ROLLS ROYCE, SMILING BROADLY, AND OCCASIONALLY STOPPING TO SHAKE HANDS WITH PEASANT CHILDREN.
