  • Description

East Germany today (Saturday, 6 March) opened talks with West Berlin authorities on an agreement to lift a five-year-old ban and allow West Berliners to cross into East Berlin for Easter. The head of West Berlin's City Government Chancellery, Herr Ulbricht Mueller, crossed the Berlin Wall for a five-hour meeting with East German State Secretary, Herr Guenther Kohrt. A brief communique after the talks said they would be continued in West Berlin on March 12.

The initiative for the talks came from the East German Prime Minister, Herr Willi Stoph. He wrote to West Berlin's Mayor Klaus Schuetz last month offering to begin negotiations on allowing West Berliners into East Berlin and East Germany. They have not been allowed there since 1952.
