  • Description

Ceremonies throughout Togo last week (21 June) marked the 15th memorial anniversary of 20 Togo rebels who died in June 1957, fighting for the independence that was to be achieved three years later.

President Etienne Eyadema attended a ceremony in Lama-Kara, a town 350 kilometres (200 miles) north of Lome. Last year, the President had unveiled a monument in the town to those who died fighting for independence.

At an official government ceremony in Lome, President Eyadema was represented by Alex Mivedor, Minister for Public Works, Transport and Mines. Thousands attended the memorial, including many government officials. Mr Mivedor laid a wreath at the base of the Lome monument to the independence fighters to Togo.

Complete independence from France was declared on 27 April 1960.
