  • Description

A MOCK SEA AND AIR ASSAULT ON RED BEACH, LEYTE ISLAND, OPENED MONDAY'S (20 OCT) COMMEMORATION OF THE LEYTE LANDINGS WHEN UNITED STATES FORCES UNDER GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR BEGAN THE RECAPTURE OF THE PHILIPPINES 25 YEARS AGO. SOME 200 FILIPINO SOLDIERS AND MARINES RUSHED ASHORE FROM LANDING-CRAFT TO COMPLETE THE RE-ENACTMENT.

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT STREAKED ACROSS THE SKY AS THE TROOPS RUSHED ASHORE. WATCHING FROM BEHIND PROTECTIVE SANDBAGS (IN CASE ANY EXPLOSIONS WERE TOO REALISTIC) WERE PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS AND THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR, MR HENRY BYROADE. WITH THEM WAS FILIPINO FOREIGN SECRETARY-GENERAL CARLOS RUMULO, ONLY LIVING MEMBER OF THE TWO-NATION HIGH COMMAND. HE STEPPED ASHORE WITH MACARTHUR.

AFTER THE MOCK LANDINGS, PRESIDENT MARCOS LAID A WREATH ON THE MEMORIAL TO THE "UNKNOWN AMERICAN SOLDIER" AND THE U.S. AMBASSADOR PLACED HIS WREATH ON THAT COMMEMORATING THE "UNKNOWN FILIPINO SOLDIER". AS THEY DID SO, BUGLERS OF BOTH NATIONS PLAYED THE LAST POST.
