  • Description

Archbishop Makarios, President of Cyprus, visited the Eastern Cyprus village of Trikomo on Sunday (11 March) to celebrate mass in a local church.

Trikomo is the birthplace of the Archbishop's bitter opponent, General George Grivas, the former leader of the Eoka guerrilla organisation. Supporters of Grivas said this week that they were giving armed protection to the three bishops of the Cyprus Orthodox Church, who on Thursday (8 March) declared that Archbishop Makarios was no longer primate of Cyprus.

Sunday's expedition to Trikomo underlined the Archbishop's determination to show his authority as head of the Church and the State.

Armed police lined the roads between Nicosia and Trikomo as the Archbishop's car passed crowds of people. When he arrived in the village, about 1,500 people turned out to welcome him. Some showered him with flower petals.
