  • Description

Police broke up a demonstration staged by about 200 students -- most of them Africans -- on the Campus of the University College of Rhodesia on Tuesday (June 16).

The demonstrators showed their disapproval at proposed changes in the composition of the College Council. They claimed the changes would almost eliminate African representations.

On the preceding evening (Monday), the students met the Principal, Professor Robert Craig, to discuss their wish for equal African and White membership of the College Council in preparation for the College's elevation to full University status next year.

Separate petitions, one signed by more than 300 students, the other by 50 members of the College staff, were handed to Professor Craig.

In the belief that a special session of the College Council held the following morning would ratify proposed amendments to its structure, the students gathered outside to protest.

Soon after they had gathered, police -- including several Special Branch Officers -- arrived and arrested three African students and one White.

One White student was hurt when he fell though a glass door in his efforts to evade arrest.

Later, the demonstration was called off after Professor Craig had addressed the students. The students, however, decided to continue their protest by boycotting lectures and opposing Professor Craig as Principal.
