  • Description

The Monsoon has already begun in Northeast India and the heavy rain fall has caused many rivers to overflow their banks. Among the badly hit areas were some of the border districts of West Bengal which now houses millions of refugees from East Pakistan. East year, during the Monsoon, in Bongaon sub-division, the river Ichhamati and its two tributaries render 80,000 to 100,000 people homeless. Though the flooding has not yet become critical in the refugee camps, it soon could be. The camps are mostly situated in low-lying areas. According to the sub-division administration, the concentration of refugees in Bongaon is the heaviest and there are as many as 40,000 refugees who are yet to get shelter in the area.
