  • Description

In West Africa, Senegal has been celebrating the seventieth birthday of President Leopold Sedar Senghor with a five-day international culture and development seminar, hosted by the Senegalese leader.

SYNOPSIS: This is the second time President Senghor, one of Africa's oldest and longest-serving leaders, has allowed his birthday to be officially celebrated.

Gambian Vice-President, Assan Mussa Camara, visited Senegal to join in the celebrations. Senegalese Prime Minister Abou Diouf -- on the left -- escorted the Gambian Vice-Premier to the official opening of the seminar on its third day. President Senghor -- in the light suit -- is a respected poet in French intellectual circles, and has always placed emphasis on cultural developments in his country. Eleven years ago he was a strong contender for a Nobel Peace Prize for literature, and is a member of the select club Agreges de Grammaire -- the highest French academic qualification.

President Senghor addressed the seminar on one of his favourite themes -- negritude; the development of the negro character, identity, and culture. The cry "I'm black and I'm proud of it" was now an accepted on,e he said. He called for black culture not only to be extended and enriched, but to be defended against other cultural influences.
