SMITH: "Let us not pretend that ??? ???o black challengers ahead as far as our country, Rhodesia is concerned. But most important of all let us not be blind to the realities of the world we live in. We are standing strongly against the evil and oppressive interventions of Russian Communist aggression. It does involve great sacrifices but it is our considered opinion that this is worthwhile. The alternative is that we accept the fact that the lights of freedom will slowly but surely be extinguished throughout this world of ours".

The day of the celebrations, Security Forces headquarters announced that another 24 guerrillas had been killed.
