  • Description

Another step was taken in Burma's return to constitutional government when on April 1 the 250 newly elected members of Parliament were sworn on. The new government, headed by U Nu, leader of the "clean" group of the Anti-Fascist Peoples' Freedom League, is to be sworn in April 6. His party, soon to be renamed the Union Party, won a landslide victory - 157 seats out of 250 - in the February general election. Elections for a relatively small number of Parliamentary seats are to be held later.

February's general election followed the decision of Premier and Chief of Staff General Ne Win to end his authoritarian regime, which began in 1958. He cam to power in place of U Nu who had then lost much of his popular support after his party joined forces with a pro-Communist group.
