  • Description

In Congo, there has been a big rally by women in support of the country's new leader, Colonel Joachim Yhombi-Opango.

SYNOPSIS: Several hundred women marched through the streets of the capital, Brazzaville, on Sunday (5 June) to show their loyalty to President Yhombi-Opango. The Colonel, Congo's former Defence Minister, took over as head of state on April the 4th following the assassination of President Marien Ngouabi. President Ngouabi was killed in his palace in Brazzaville during an attempted coup on the 18th of March.

As the women marched through the streets, they carried placards... some bearing President Yhombi-Opango's portrait and others with slogans of support for him. The new leader is generally regarded as a moderate, despite his close friendship with the Marxist President Ngouabi.

Shortly after his appointment as president of Congo's ruling military committee, President Yhombi-Opango annulled the country's 1973 constitution. The military committee has taken over powers which were formerly exercised by the Council of State and the National Assembly. The annulment of the constitution also meant the suppression of all regional powers introduced by the late President Ngouabi.
