  • Description

An uneasy peace still prevails in Santo Domingo. Part of the credit for the relative stability is given to occasional gentle reminders that the Organisation of American States still has large numbers of troops there ready to keep the peace.

On Thursday, a convoy of U.S. troops rolled through the streets to pay what was described as "a half-hour's friendly visit" to the ancient Ozama Fortress where Dominican government forces are now encamped in what is still generally regarded as rebel territory.

The Fortress has been the scene of occasional clashes with disgruntled rebel remnants.

An American helicopter (shown in the film) carrying the U.S. military adviser and the Dominican defense chief also landed at the Fortress for a "courtesy" call.

The meaning was obvious - part of the daily routine of making the O.A.S. presence felt around Santo Domingo.
