  • Description

Headed by thirty mayors wearing their sash of office, Belgian miners from the depressed Borinage coalfields marched through Brussels Oct 19 and rallied outside the headquarters of the European Coal and Steel Pool as ministers met inside to discuss the closure of more Borinage mines.

The Pool recommended earlier the closing of pits and the Belgian Mines Board decided on the date - 1961. Strong forces of steel-helmeted police armed with rifles and truncheons guarded the Pool and Government buildings.

About 500 miners took part in the rally outside the Pool building while another group were involved in a clash with police. In the Borinage area, some 7,000 men struck over the proposed closures. Municipal office workers in the area also staged a one-hour sympathy strike.
