  • Description

A BRITISH HOME OFFICE SPOKESMAN TODAY (THURSDAY) DISCOUNTED A SENIOR POLICEMAN'S REPORT THAT A "FULL-SCALE MILITARY ATTACK" WOULD BE MOUNTED TO FREE THREE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERS FROM DURHAM GAOL, IN NORTHERN ENGLAND. MR. ALEC MUIR, CHIEF CONSTABLE OF COUNTY DURHAM, HAD SAID FRIENDS OF THE ROBBERS MIGHT USE TANKS, BOMBS, BAZOOKAS AND "LIMITED" ATOMIC WEAPONS IN AN ESCAPE OPERATION.

CHIEF CONSTABLE MUIR HAS CALLED IN ARMED TROOPS TO GUARD DURHAM GAOL. THREE OF THE TRAIN ROBBERS HELD IN THE MAXIMUM SECURITY BLOCK AT DURHAM ARE DOUGLAS GORDON GOODY, ROY JAMES AND THOMAS WISBEY, ALL SERVING 30 YEARS. ACCORDING TO MR. MUIR, GOODY WAS THE "BRAINS" OF THE TRAIN ROBBERY AND WITH GBP2 MILLION STERLING (5.6 MILLION DOLLARS) AT STAKE, HIS FRIENDS WOULD GO TO ANY LENGTHS TO FREE HIM.

THE CHIEF CONSTABLE SAID HE WOULD NOT AGREE TO HAVING THE ARMED TROOPS REMOVED FROM DURHAM GAOL UNLESS THE THREE TRAIN ROBBERS WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE NEW MAXIMUM SECURITY WING JUST COMPLETED AT PARKHURST, ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT.

SINCE THE LAST WEEK IN JANUARY, CLUSTERS OF NEWSMEN AND PHOTOGRAPHERS HAVE BEEN WAITING NEAR PARKHURST GAOL IN CASE THE ROBBER ARE MOVED THERE.

MEANWHILE, MR. JACK MILLS, THE 60-YEAR-OLD TRAIN DRIVER WHO WAS COSHED DURING THE ROBBERY IN AUGUST, 1963, WAS REPORTED TO BE IN FAILING HEALTH. HIS RAILWAY UNION COLLEAGUES SAID MR. MILLS SLEPT BADLY AND LIVED IN FEAR THAT THE ROBBERS WOULD BREAK OUT AND TAKE SOME KIND OF REVENGE ON HIM.
