  • Description

At Rotterdam, Mar 25, Crown Princess Beatrix of Holland opened the "Floriade" international horticultural exhibition, marking the 400th anniversary of the introduction from Turkey of the first tulip bulbs to reach Western Europe.

Scheduled for six months, the exhibition covers 100 acres of a park on the banks of the River Mass. Over two million bulbs have been planted in the grounds, and spring flowers are already massed in the exhibition halls and numerous greenhouses. Visitors from all over the world, expected to number hundreds of thousands, will be able to enjoy the brilliant colours of the outdoor flowers not only from the ground but also from cable cars in the air above and from the "EUROMAST", a steel-and-concrete tower 380ft high, with a restaurant for 900 people at its summit, newly built alongside the exhibition.

Holland, the United States, France, Western Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg are participating in the show, with gardens and pavilions typical of their national tastes and horticultural systems. Part of Sir Winston Churchill's rose again at Chartwell in England has been faithfully reproduced, and a "Royal Garden" is filled with flowers and plants from the gardens and greenhouses of the Royal families of the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, Luxembourg and Monaco.

During the coming months there will be a succession of seasonal shows - of spring flowers, then of violets, irises, roses, lilies, gladioli and dahlias - and a number of special events, such as international flower-arrangement contests and exhibitions of orchids and other exotic flower. Exhibits will come from countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa and the United States.
