The mystery surrounding recluse American multi-millionaire Howard Hughes deepened yesterday (Tuesday). While the court battle between top executives in the Hughes empire continued in Las Vegas, two of the chief witnesses gave news men conflicting views on the Hughes mystery.
On one hand, Levar Myler, one of Hughes' special assistants, claims to have seen Hughes almost daily for 20 years and that he is in good health. On the other, executive Robert Maheu said he was "concerned for the welfare" of Mr. Hughes.
The court battle centres on Mr. Maheu's fight ton remain head of Hughes' 30 million dollar (12 million sterling) Nevada operations. He is demanding the personal confirmation of Mr. Hughes to uphold a bid by executives of a parent company to fire him from his post:
