Background: U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy returned to New York Wednesday (1 Dec.) from an extensive Latin American tour. A highlight was a 24 hour trip into the upper reaches of the Amazon river during which the Senator and his wife Ethel visited remote towns along the river and an inland Indian village.

The Senator and his party flew to Manaus, at the fork of the Amazon and Negro Rivers, some 800 miles west of Belem. There, on Sunday (28 November), they boarded a river boat. The party visited a small village along the banks of the river, upstream from Manaus where Mr. Kennedy and his wife were enthusiastically received. At one point, the Senator tossed a football around with some of the village youths. (Mr. Kennedy, and the other male members of the Kennedy family are noted devotees of touch football.) Later, the party boarded the boat again and visited a somewhat larger village some 53 miles upriver for Manaus. The greeting there was equally enthusiastic. The Senator and his wife were shown a tractor, and on that occasion, Mr. Kennedy and some of the village children were driven around on a flat bed trailer pulled by the tractor.

Later, the Senator was flown to a remote Indian village where he met the headman and some of his council.

He returned to Manaus on Monday (29 Nov.).
