  • Description

HONG KONG, BADLY HIT BY DROUGHT AND DESPERATELY IN NEED OF WATER, HAS HAD TO INTRODUCE RATIONING, AND FAMILIES ARE BEING LIMITED TO FOUR HOURS' SUPPLY EVERY OTHER DAY. THE SITUATION HAS BEEN AGGRAVATED BY THE EXPIRATION OF A CONTRACT FOR THE SUPPLY OF WATER WITH THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

HONG KONG NORMALLY RECEIVES 15,000 MILLION GALLONS (ABOUT 68,000 MILLION LITRES) FOR THE NINE MONTHS TO JUNE, WHEN THE YEAR'S AGREEMENT ENDS. A REQUEST FOR AN ADDITIONAL 2,000 MILLION GALLONS (9,000 LITRES) FOR JULY HAS SO FAR NOT RECEIVED A REPLY.

AND YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THE PRICES OF COMMODITIES SOARED AS A LEFTIST-PLANNED FOOD STRIKE TOOK A GRIP. SUPPLIES FROM MAINLAND CHINA HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED, AND BECAUSE OF THE SCARCITY, EGGS, VEGETABLES, MEAT AND THE LIKE HAVE ALMOST DOUBLED IN PRICE. LARGE QUANTITIES OF LOCAL PRODUCE HAVE BEEN UNLOADED ON THE MARKET, HOWEVER, AND THE GOVERNMENT SAYS THERE IS PREPACKAGED FOOD TO MEET THE CRISIS, EXPECTED TO LAST FOUR DAYS.

AMONG ITS OTHER TROUBLES, THE CITY IS ALSO AWAITING THE ARRIVAL OF TYPHOON ANITA, WHICH IS SAID TO BE CHURNING ITS WAY OVER THE SOUTH CHINA SEA. CALM PREVAILS, HOWEVER, AND TRANSPORT SERVICES, DISRUPTED AS A RESULT OF A STRIKE LAST SATURDAY, ARE SLOWLY RETURNING TO NORMAL.
