    Background: LIMASSOL, THE SECOND LARGEST CITY IN CYPRUS WAS FRAUGHT WITH INTER-RACIAL FIGHTING ON THURSDAY. IN THE BLOODIEST CLASH SINCE THE PRESENT SITUATION BEGAN JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS, AT LEAST FIFTY GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS DIED.

    ALTHOUGH A CEASE-FIRE WAS ARRANGED BY THE JOINT TRUCE FORCE COMMANDER, GENERAL PETER YOUNG, SPORADIC GUNFIRE CONTINUED INTO THE EVENING.

    THE SITUATION IN LIMASSOL YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) WAS REPORTED TO BE QUIET, BUT INT HE TOWNS OF POLIS AND KTIMA AT LEAST THREE CYPRIOTS DIED IN FURTHER FIGHTING.

    BRITISH TROOPS ARE NOW PATROLLING THE CITY OF LIMASSOL IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP THE PEACE WHILE NEGOTIATIONS ARE GOING AHEAD IN AN EFFORT TO BRING A LASTING PEACE TO THE TROUBLED ISLAND.

    THE NEW COMMANDER OF THE BRITISH TRUCE FORCE IN CYPRUS, GENERAL R.M.P. CARVER HAS FLOWN TO THE ISLAND TO TAKE OVER COMMAND FROM GENERAL YOUNG.

    A BRITISH SPOKESMAN SAID THAT EARLY ON THURSDAY MORNING GREEK CYPRIOTS LAUNCHED AN ATTACK ON TURKISH CYPRIOT POSITIONS IN LIMASSOL WITH HOMEMADE TANK, AN ARMOURED BULLDOZER AND SMALL ARMS. WOUNDED TURKS WERE BROUGHT TO A TEMPORARY HOSPITAL SET UP CLOSE TO THE SCENE OF THE FIGHTING. TURKISH RESCUE SQUADS CLAIM THAT THEY WERE FIRED UPON BE GREEKS WHILE MOVING INJURED MEN TO SAFETY. REFUGEES ALSO FLOCKED TO THE HOSPITAL.
