  • Description

Courageous, the United States defender of the America's Cup, beat challenging yacht Australia on Sunday (18th September) to win the best of seven series 4-0. The race marked the end of the 23rd unsuccessful attempt to take the Cup from the United States. It has never been lost to a foreign challenger since it was first won by the yacht America, in 1851.

SYNOPSIS: Conditions were fine as the two yachts headed out of Newport, Rhode Island, for the Australian challenger's final chance to save the series.

Courageous established an early lead over her rival, skippered by Noel Robins, on her way to completing a clean sweep of victories in the best-of-seven series. Australia lost the series despite the kind of whether in the final race that should have been to her advantage. She lost the race by two minutes 25 seconds, again being outclassed by Ted Turner's superb seamanship. The winning margins was largely a repetition of the first three races.

Many regard the colourful Turner as the greatest showman in the yachting world. And the skippered Courageous with the expertise expected of a man who's ben sailing boats since he was three years old.

A westerly 12-to 15-knot breeze provided the Australians with the conditions in which they felt they had their last hope of holding Courageius in at least one race.

Needing to win to say alive in the Cup, Noel Robins and his crew split off from Courageous near the race committee's boat 45 seconds before the gun and sailed off on a port track. It was a clever, well-timed start. Courageous also went off to port 100 yards down the line. There was no time difference and the committee called the start dead even. But when both yachts changed headsails and began a tacking duel, Courageous pulled ahead.

Courageous went farther ahead the longer the race continued. After three hours - and five legs - she held a seemingly insurmountable advantages of just under two-and-a-half minutes.

Some of her increased margin was due to a moderation of winds.

Turner changed to a different spinnaker as he headed for home,- and inevitable victory.
