Background: Though well-know in Australia "Balmerino" was a bit of a 'dark horse' in his first British outing at Goodwood today (Monday, 12 September). He has been in this country for about three weeks and is being trained at John Dunlop's stables at Arundel. It is planned for Balmerino to stay here for a few more races (at Ascot) before travelling to France for the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on October 2. The whole of Balmerino's British stay is in preparation for the big French classic. At Goodwood Balmerino was racing in the 3.15 Valdoe Stakes over 1 1/4 miles. The softish conditions suited the Aussi horse and he was being ridden by Ron Hutchinson (who began his racing career in Australia). But the tipsters all went for Lucent and Fluellen. Balmerino started slowly and was last after 1/4 mile but slowly he made up ground on the stand side and led over last two furlongs to win.
