  • Description

March 5, sunshine at London Zoo, a day for baby's first picture: the Bruin Twin Brothers, the second litter of pure Syrian bears to be born at the Zoo, Dec 29. It was their first outing away from their mother.

Both weigh 8 1/2 pounds. Their names? Until the day previous no one even knew their sex.

The offspring of Winnie and Pickles, they have big claws and will be one of the Zoo's big attractions this summer. The first litter -also by Winnie and Pickles, - are now 15 months old.

The twins howled for mother when picked up for weighing by their keepers, Sam Morton and Eddie Andrews.

The Syrian bear is a very light-brown race of the Brown Bear and is found in scattered mountainous districts from Asia Minor and Syria to Persia. Winnie, who was presented to the London Zoo in 1949, came from Iran. Pickles started life in South Persia and came to London in 1934 when still a cub of between six to ten months. He has fathered many of the Brown Bears born at the Zoo.
