    AFTER 76,000 UNITED STATES AND FILIPINO SOLDIERS SURRENDERED TO THE JAPANESE ON BATAAN N 1942 THE BATTLE OF CORREGIDOR BEGAN. IN A COSTLY STAND THEY MANAGED TO DELAY THE JAPANESE THRUST THAT THREATENED EVEN AUSTRALIAN.

    AT A CEREMONY ON FRIDAY (7 APRIL) THE FLAG RAISING WAS WATCHED BY COMMODORE-PASTOR VIADO, COMMANDER ARTHUR BRASSI AND COMMANDER RAFAEL ESTRADA. THEY ALSO LAID WREATHES IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN.

    LEADING THE UNITED STATES VETERANS WAS COLONEL RAY O'DAY, COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE 21ST DIVISION OF THE PHILIPPINES ARMY DURING WORLD WAR II.
