Background: In the Dropulli region of southern Albania, a self-contained Greek community is perpetuating the traditions of centuries by keeping their Greek language and culture in being. Several hundred people of Greek extraction live in villages like Gjirokastra where, although part of Albania, the people speak Greek and, on festive days, dress in Greek national costume. Excavations in the region show that the region was inhabited by Illyrian Greeks some three thousand years ago and, despite the shifts of history and politics since then, has remained predominantly Greek ever since. Today, they enjoy all the facilities of the Albanian state but retain their own Greek identity.
