Background: Mr John Gorton, the Prime Minister of Australia, resigned today (Wednesday) after a crisis meeting of the ruling Liberal Party. He was replaced as Prime Minister and Liberal Party Leader by Mr William McMahon, the former Foreign Minister.
The move came after a tense three-hour party meeting where Mr Gorton faced a no confidence motion. A secret ballot was held and tied 33-33. Mr Gorton then cast his deciding vote against himself, saying he no longer had the support of the party.
This Library Film shows both Mr Gorton and Mr McMahon, following Mr Gorton's re-election as Party leader in 1969. It includes them shaking hands.
