  • Description

Fourteen Japanese fishermen were feared drowned and fifteen South Korean seamen were missing after two separate collisions involving four ships off western Japan early on Friday (12 April).

The fishermen were on board a 284-ton tuna boat, "Shuei Maru Number Eight" which collided with the 11,144 ton Liberian-registered "Ocean Sovereign". The "Shuei Maru" was holed, and overturned, trapping seventeen men inside. Three were rescued by a passing ferry, but the other fourteen went down when she later ???ank. Strenuous efforts by the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency -- the Coastguards -- using divers and a craneship failed to save her.

The "Ocean Sovereign" was damaged on her hull but the damage was superficial and there were no casualties.

In the second collision, the 999-ton South Korean freighter, "Hae Yung" split it two and sank after colliding with another big ship, the 21,467 ton United States container ship "President Pierce." Only nice of the Korean boat's crew were rescued. Ships and aircraft combed the area for signs of the fifteen missing men, but without success.

The Korean boat sank soon after the collision, but again the damage to the larger ship was minor.
