Background: GOVANDI (BOMBAY SUBURB), MAHARASHTRA STATE, INDIA

More than 130 people have died in six days of clashes between Hindus and Moslems in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Troops and police stepped up patrols in and around Bombay on May 22 in an attempt to quell the violence which has left several areas of the state capital devastated. In the Bombay suburb of Govandi, police were out in strength in the now-deserted streets, littered with debris of the previous night's rioting. State officials said that five people were killed when security forces opened fire on groups of Moslems and Hindus fighting running battles in slum areas. Police said they found debris soaked in kerosene and the remains of Molotov cocktails in a district where several homes were destroyed by fire. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who visited the riot zone on May 21, announced shortly afterwards that the region was again under control. She also said that security would be intensified, and urged religious tolerance upon the warring Hindu and Moslem communities.
