    Background: HUNDREDS OF ARMY CADETS AT SANDHURST - BRITAIN'S FAMOUS ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY - TODAY (TUESDAY) WERE PUT THROUGH THEIR PACES IN PREPARATION FOR THE SOVEREIGN'S PARADE ON THURSDAY (DEC 19).THIS ANNUAL EVENT, CLIMAXING TWO YEARS OF ACADEMIC AS WELL AS MILITARY TRAINING, MARKS THE FORMAL "PASSING OUT" WHEN THE CADETS GAIN COMMISSIONS BEFORE JOINING REGULAR UNITS.

    AMONG THE CADETS TODAY WERE MANY FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, INCLUDING MALAYA, NIGERIA AND IRAQ ALL CAME UNDER THE CAREFUL SCRUTINY OF THE ACADEMY COMMANDANT, MAJOR-GENERAL J.MOGG, WHO INSPECTED THE PRACTICE PARADE.ON THURSDAY THE SALUTE WILL BE TAKEN BY THE QUARTER-MASTER GENERAL, GENERAL SIR GERALD LATHBURY, ON BEHALF OF QUEEN ELIZABETH.

    TWO AWARDS WILL BE MADE TO THE MOST PROMISING CADETS: BOTH THIS YEAR ARE BRITISH.ONE DISTINCTION, THE SWORD OF HONOUR, GOES TO SENIOR UNDER-OFFICER F.W.G.PETTIGREW; THE OTHER, THE QUEEN'S MEDAL, TO SENIOR UNDER-OFFICER K.A.MITCHESON.

    FINALLY, BRINGING THE CEREMONY TO ITS TRADITIONAL CLOSE, THE ADJUTANT WILL RIDE A WHITE HORSE UP THE ACADEMY STEPS.
